The mother, pregnant for the first time, had opted for an abortion after prenatal scans suggested that her baby was disabled.
However, the infant survived the procedure, carried out on Saturday in the Rossano Calabro hospital, and was left by doctors to die.
He was discovered alive the following day – some 20 hours after the operation – by Father Antonio Martello, the hospital chaplain, who had gone to pray beside his body.
Yes, you read that right. A baby was born alive and left to die by doctors.He found that the baby, wrapped in a sheet with his umbilical cord still attached, was moving and breathing.
Sadly, this kind of thing is OK according to our president. The Born Alive Infant Protection Act requires doctors in the US to care for the life of a baby born alive in a batched abortion. When he voted against this bill (one three separate occasions, Obama explained his vote by saying why burden the decision to abort? Yes, there are Obama apologists who point out that the president claims he was just trying to protect Roe v. Wade, but the bill that he voted against had language identical to the bill that was eventually passed, and last I looked it hasn't overturned Roe v Wade. And frankly, if you think that Roe v Wade is contrary to giving basic care to a living infant, then it deserves to be changed.
I also suspect this happens a lot more often than just this one story, in Italy and in the US. It just isn't spoken about. In Canada, for instance, it happened 491 times.
On the plus side (if there can be a "plus" to any of this) sometimes these children do survive to adulthood. Gianna Jesson (pictured above) is one such survivor.
